A letter from Amesbury Youth Hockey League from November 22, 1999 Dear McGrath Family and Friends, I wanted keep all of you updated on the status of the funds that you have generously donated to Amesbury Youth Hockey in Paul's name. First, this is the fund that was established at Paul's funeral where the League was beneficiary in lieu of flowers. That fund's total was approximately $1700. The Board of Directors felt that a fitting tribute would be to order 40 Amesbury hockey jerseys. These jerseys carry Paul's initials on each should, along with a logo of two crossed hockey sticks. The jerseys, ordered in larger sizes, are currently, and proudly, being worn by members of the Bantam and PeeWee teams. The remainder of the fund was used to purchase complete first aid kits for each team in AYHL. The second fund was generate from the wonderful golf tournament organized over the summer. As most of you know, the league was beneficiary for about $7500 from that tournament. The Board of Directors unanimously felt that the most appropriate use of this money was to establish financial aid for those who wish to play hockey, but need some assistance paying for fees or equipment. The idea is that this money will be held in a trust, with the interest from the fund going towards scholarships in Paul's name. We will be creating a committee to determine the best way to organize and fulfill this mission. Included in that will be determining ways to increase the fund so as to offer more and larger scholarships. Since our ideal is to leave the principal and use only the interest, growing the fund will add significantly to the aid we can offer in Paul's memory. Lastly, the League is organizing a Bruins alumni game on January 7th at Graf rink. We are still in the planning stages but we'd like to do something special between periods to honor Paul publicly. I know Troy mention that he'd like to make a presentation of the golf tourney "check." I will keep you updated as plan become more concrete. In conclusion, let me add what a pleasure it's been to work with Paul's family and friends. It is remarkable that after such a tragic event, you have been able to create a living and perpetual memory to Paul. The golf tournament was unbelievably well organized. No one would believe it was the first. I hope that it continues on an annual basis. If there is anything you would like the League to do for next year's tournament (organization, staffing, publicity, etc.) please do not hesitate to let us know. Sincerely, Ron Starr, President, Amesbury Youth Hockey League |
